Srinathji with Cows Pichwai Style
Pichwai or Pichvai is a style of painting that originated over 400 years ago, in the town of Nathdwara near Udiapur, India. The word Pichwai comes from ‘pichh’ meaning back, and ‘wai’, meaning textile hanging. Originally, pichwai paintings were used to decorate the temple of Krishna/Shrinathji in Nathdwara,Rajasthan, India. Intricate and visually appealing Pichwai paintings, originally made on cloth, were hung behind the deity to celebrate different seasons, festivals and events in Lord Krishna’s life. The purpose of Pichwais other than artistic appeal is to narrate tales of Krishna to the illiterate. Over time, pichwais have found a place in the homes of art connoisseurs, owing to their visual appeal. We have put in efforts to recreate this dying art form and present it to the world.
